The best paid skills you can learn while in lockdown

Workers trained in computer programming or foreign languages can earn up to double the national average

Thousands of career-savvy Britons can use the coronavirus lockdown to pick up new skills and boost their salary by as much as £30,000. 

Britain has huge skills shortages in industries such as technology. Workers fluent in computer programming languages including Java are able to secure salaries of around £60,000 a year, compared to the national average of £30,000. Here are the best skills to learn to boost your pay during lockdown. 

Learn to code  

Most large businesses will have their own programming system which requires someone able to code to manage it. Different systems use different programming languages, such as Python, Java or Figma. Learning one of these 2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appcould give you thousands of job opportunities to choose from.

There are currently around 10,000 job postings asking for a knowledge of Java and more than 13,000 requiring Python, data from SHL, a website for employers, showed. The average salaries for jobs requiring these coding languages are £60,665 and £59,771 respectively.  The best paid programming skill of all is PL/SQL, which is an extended version of the SQL programming language. Average salaries for workers with this skill are around £71,000 a year. 

Learn a foreign language  

Those who are better with people than computers could pick up a foreign language instead. Learning a new language can enhance your pay2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围app by around 10pc, according to jobs site Adzuna. However for languages that are less commonly learnt in British schools, the salary boost can be even bigger. 

The best language to learn to increase your career prospects is Arabic. The average pay of jobs requiring Arabic as a second language on Adzuna is £50,097.

Next most lucrative to learn are Mandarin and Dutch; speakers of these languages can achieve salaries of £44,296 and £43,336 respectively. Those with German, Spanish, Japanese or Russian as a second language all also have access to job opportunities paying more than £35,000 – £5,000 more than the national average. 

2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appThe languages offering the most job opportunities are French and German, which both have around 3,000 advertised postings. Next most sought-after are Spanish and Mandarin. 

Teach yourself SEO

There are almost 6,000 live job postings requiring search engine optimisation (SEO) skills, SHL found. Other popular skills among employers in marketing are an understanding of how to use Google Analytics and Jira, a type of project management software. 

How to retrain

A huge number of education websites and universities are offering free training courses during the coronavirus period, including lessons in how to code and foreign language classes.
