Boris Johnson's red lines prove he is going for a second round Brexit knockout

F2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appor almost four years, Leave voters have had our motivations dictated to us by out-of-touch politicians who have never taken a step outside the M25. From immigration to bendy bananas, NHS funding to Russian interference, our political class have never grasped what Brexit means to the 17.4 million - until now.

Reading the British Government’s document setting out our own red lines, I have never been more optimistic that those governing us understand what we want: control. For Brexiteers, leaving the EU was never about numbers on a spreadsheet but about delivering the principle of self-governance - the rest will follow.

If Frost and Boris hold their nerve, then that will have finally been delivered. The UK is only taking the EU up on Donald Tusk’s kind offer of a Canada-style deal - Michel Barnier’s own slideshow pointed to it as the logical conclusion.

2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appAs with anything in life, the proof of the pudding is in the eating but Boris has had a small taste of the electoral success embracing a pure Brexit can bring and he will be desperate for more. He explicitly ran a campaign based on these red lines, and was rewarded handsomely.

He will rightly steal the headlines with his marquee pledge to walk away from the talks by June unless the EU are playing ball. The British Government can achieve their key objective of restoring sovereignty through WTO terms, but the EU’s main aim of close alignment would be dashed in this scenario. For the first time in years, we are on the front foot and Boris needs to take full advantage.

This would be the doomsday scenario for the EU. A low-tax, low-regulation, thriving British economy on their doorstep would be the final nail in the coffin for the sclerotic Eurozone. With Macron’s ‘dynamic alignment’, this would be impossible - we would have escaped the EU prison only to be put on indefinite house arrest.

I have very little faith in many of our MPs to govern effectively but their ultimate bosses, the British people, have the best judge of character I know. Boris’s ‘sovereign equals’ red line ensures that the EU must respect our legal autonomy, something which Macron will not be able to stomach.

2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appThe inclusion of the line ‘right to manage their own resources as they see fit’ would be taken as a given for the vast majority of countries, but successive British Governments have surrendered control of British assets for nothing in return.

The plight of British fishermen is emblematic of the larger struggle. Even Macron has admitted Boris ‘has a card in his hand and it is fishing’ - they would have been choking on their coffee in the Élysée after Michael Gove made it abundantly clear in the House of Commons that access to British fishing waters were not to be linked to access to the EU market.

T2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appo those that question the British Government’s integrity after rejecting so firmly parts of the Political Declaration, they should look to the EU’s own negotiating mandate in which they conveniently ignore commitments made on financial services. It was only ever based on ‘best endeavours’ and should be roundly ignored now.

E2020欧洲杯体育足彩外围appU leaders will be acutely aware of the fact that time is on Boris’s side. They all seek re-election before him and any sense that Russian roulette is being played with their already weakening economies will result in heavy losses at the ballot box.

The PM is in a uniquely powerful position to crowbar hefty concessions out of Paris and Berlin- they may have won the first round but Boris should go for the knockout in the second.
